The 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup is the sixth instance of the FIFA Women's World Cup, the world championship for women's nationalassociation football teams. It is being held from 26 June to 17 July 2011 in Germany, which won the right to host the event in October 2007.

The matches are played in nine stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final being played at the Commerzbank Arena inFrankfurt. Sixteen teams were selected for participation via a worldwide qualification tournament that began in 2009. In the first round of the tournament finals, the teams compete in round-robin groups of four teams for points, with the top two teams in each group proceeding. These eight teams advance to the knockout stage, where two rounds of play decide which teams will participate in the final.

Today's Spotlight

Australia defeated Equatorial Guinea 3-2 in their second Group D match in the FIFA Women's World Cup in Bochum, Germany.
Australia were forced to defend the last seven minutes of the match after Anonman's second goal in the 83rd minute gave Equatorial Guinea a slight hope of a comeback, but goals from Leena Khamis, Emily van Egmond and Lisa De Vanna were enough to give the Matildas their first three points of the competition.
"I can't be any happier in my first World Cup; to get a goal, an assist and three points which was the main thing for today," Khamis, who is in her first World Cup appearance, said in an after match press conference.
"It was a good strike from Heather Garriock and the keeper made a good save and I just followed up on it. It wasn't going anywhere but the back of the net."
The Matildas now need just a draw against Norway in their final group game on Thursday morning (AEST) to progress to the quarterfinals.
Australia coach Tom Sermanni was happy with the result but not all aspects of his team's performance.
"There was some very very poor passages of play that we need to tighten up on, if we want to go further in this tournament," Sermanni said.
"For 90 percent of the second half in particular I thought we played very very well but there are some aspects of the game that we need to sort out before Norway."
Sermanni said he was confident the defensive glitches could be corrected in time for the Norway game.
