The Freedom Cup is a minor international rugby union trophy contested between South Africa and New Zealand, during the Tri-nations tournament. It was first contested in 2004 (the 10 year anniversary of South African democracy), in a one-off test. The game, played at Ellis Park, Johannesburg was won 40-26 by South Africa. However, in the 2006 Tri Nations Series, it was contested in all three New Zealand - South Africa matches.
New Zealand won 2 of the matches (one home and one away) giving them the Freedom Cup for the first time, but during the post match presentation after the third game, won by South Africa, Supersport presenter Joost van der Westhuizen incorrectly presented the trophy to Springbok captain John Smit who accepted it in front of millions of television viewers. The mistake was later corrected, off-air.
In the Tri Nations Freedom Cup 2011, South Africa and New Zealand face off in Port Elizabeth, on Saturday, August 20th at 17:05 local time. New Zealand will be looking for a victory against South Africa for what will be their fifth in a row when they visit the nation. The All Blacks recently beat the Springbosk in Wellington and they also had a game in 2010 that ended 29-22 and was held in Johannesburg. New Zealand now has a total of forty six wins to only 33 from South Africa, but the biggest meeting that they played saw South Africa win in the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

South Africa is going to play its last match before Rugby World Cup 2011 against the All Blacks on their own soil in Port Elizabeth on August 20. The sides will be standing toe-to-toe for the second time in the tournament. The last contest was won quite easily by the All Blacks on July 30 when the All Blacks tamed the Boks by 40-7 in Wellington.
The teams have faced each other 82 times before this particular match and the visiting All Blacks are far ahead of the hosts. New Zealand has managed to carry the day on 46 occasions whereas Boks bagged the win 33 times. Currently, South Africa is on a three match losing streak as it has not won a single match in the current version of the Tri Nations Cup.
